Polar Express

One cookie wasn't enough, he had to have two.

Yes, he gets who Santa is, and was so excited to see him.

He was not so excited when Santa went away. He actually was like this most of the train ride.

We took Duncan to the Polar Express before Thanksgiving and he was excited, but we had to drive to Williams that day and he would NOT take a nap on the way up there, and then just 20 minute away he finally fell asleep. So needless to say he was a total grouch the whole time. Plus it was sooo cold and windy while we were there so that was not so fun, but we made the best of it.

Duncan the Pirate! ARGG- he is all about pirates right now. He loves Jake and the Neverland Pirates, he has to wear this hat and have his sword in his hand when he is watching it. So cute.

Wild Life Zoo

Last week was my Fall break, although it felt more like a summer/fall break seeing as how someone forgot to tell the weather that it is fall and that 90 + degree weather is no longer needed. Anyway, the heat put a few dampers on my plans, but we still went to the zoo and Papa came with us. We had a good time. The giraffe was a big hit, Duncan enjoyed feeding him, and they also had a train so we went on a train ride as well. We also saw lots of fish, penguins, and we got to pet sting rays. I have noticed that with a 2 year old it is harder to take pictures. If I let him go for a second he takes off. So there are very few pictures of our zoo trip.

Duncan has two obsessions right now (besides Mickey Mouse) Trains and Pirates. We went to Anthem to the outlets there and they had this cute little train. We only had enough cash for Duncan and one to ride, so Justin got to go with him. He loved it! He shouted "All Aboard" when they got on. He had a good time so much so that he cried for 20 min after he got off, and then we had to avoid the train the rest of the time we were there. It was fun though.

Summer Fun

Some friends from work and I went to see the cars from Cars 2 early this summer before the movie came out. Man it was sooo hot and the line was so long that we just went over and took pictures on the other side. The kids were fine with it because they didn't even let them touch the cars.

Then we took the kids over to the splash pad to cool off. Duncan and Hailey having fun in the water.

He was so excited to get a potty, it was so cute. I bought him Mickey Mouse underwear, a potty that sings and I decorated a jar and put m&m's in it, so he gets one candy for going pee and two for, well you know. And he actually went pee in the potty.

Justin thought it was weird that I was taking his picture, but its a big deal my baby is growing up :(

Camp fire and Fire works

We went to another canyon and had a camp fire and made s'mores! They were so yummy! Then we went back to the house and set off a few fireworks.
We had a great time in Utah and Duncan had a blast playing with his cousins. He was really sad when we had to leave.

We picked up an extra on the way. Jackson was at BYU for a summer session and I was so excited to see him as I didn't get to go to his graduation. This was his first time meeting Duncan. The oldest boy grandson and the youngest together at last.

He was so good with Duncan. All the kids were great with him. He LOVED playing with Elliot and Henry and they were so good to him.

We had to go have these yummy waffles that come from Belguim. They are sweet, a special sugar is used to make them.

Of cours we went to Temple Square- we walked around and went into some of the stores. It was not as hot as I thought it was going to be.

Way to go Aubree! I am so proud of you. Aubree will be going to ASU and she will be studying to become a nurse. My nephew Jackson also graduated from High School in Arlington, MA and is going to BYU. I wish I could have been there. These two are the first grand kids and I just have so many memories of playing with them and babysitting them when they were little. I just can't believe they are grown up and going to college. I am so incredibly proud of them and the great example they are setting for the rest of their sibling(s) and cousins.

We got to our hotel early, so we went to Bubba Gumps and it was good. Duncan liked the tartar sauce more than anything else.

Oh this is my favorite place to go. I wish it didn't cost so darn much to go, I almost had Justin convinced we needed annual passes, but couldn't quit get him to commit. If I could live there I would that is how much I love it. Did you know that Disney World was supposed to be a new kind of city? They were going to build it so people could live there. How cool would that be? Only I wouldn't want to live in Florida.

Nana is the best card maker. She knows who Duncan likes. Duncan licks people now after watching Mickey Mouse and seeing Pluto lick. So we call them Pluto kisses.

So cute- he wrapped himself in the quilt grandma made him. The story of The Three Little Pigs.

I made this garland with my Cricut cutter. The best investment ever. I made all the decorations for his party.

So I also made up this game. They played Pin the Bow on Minnie. I cut the Mickey head out and the bows, numbered them and laminated them and the kids had so much fun. You could also do pin the bow-tie on mickey, but Duncan has mostly girl cousins so I thought this would be fun for them.

I also had the game Hidden Mickey. I cut smaller Mickey heads out and used a metalic sharpie to number them and hid them around the house and people had to search to find them. It was fun, even the adults liked it.

Yes, it has been a crazy few months since April when I last posted. Duncan had his 2nd birthday, school ended, we went to Disneyland, Graduations. It has been busy.

So I am going to just put some pictures of Easter. First, we dyed eggs. (I can't get more than 4 pictures to upload per post, I don't know why, if anyone does, Please let me know-it drives me crazy). Actually I just found out the answer, but I will have to look more into.

I had to take Duncan to the eye Dr in Scottsdale today and it was horrible. Waited an hour then had to wait another 20 min for Dr. then he decided to dilate Duncan's eyes and that was another 25 min wait all for him to see him for 5 min and say that he doesn't need glasses yet. Oh, and Duncan who isn't 2 yet yelled and screamed the whole time because he wanted to get into things he couldn't have. So a 9am Dr. apt ended at 11am. Yeah for me. So to relax we went over to Kierland. I like to go here and window shop and as we walked around I noticed these topiaries. They were all over and oh my goodness- So CUTE!

Fun Lunch

Chloe's Corner is Yummy! I had a chicken salad sandwich and it was de-lis-ous! They have a tone of sandwiches, hot and cold, soups, salads and they have breakfast. They also have food packaged if you need to dash in and go. So cute and good food.

A trip to the Zoo

We got the most important part of our trip planned-the hotel. Very excited that I used Priceline for the first time, I just hope all goes smoothly when we go check in. It was a great deal and the hotel is across the street!!

Can you tell I'm excited? I keep thinking, "I hope 3 days is enough." It will be, I remember last year saying that 4 days was too many, but Duncan was crawling and that was the biggest pain. He kept crying to get down. That boy only likes to be held for a certain amount of time and then he wants to walk, or crawl last year. My mom and dad are coming too so that will be a lot of fun. I wonder how long I can get away with calling this his birthday gift? Maybe he won't get wise to it, but he is a smart boy.

Must read if a Disney fan!

If you are a Disney fan, you need to-NO! You must read these books. The stories are set in Florida at Walt Disney World, and at first I didn't want to read them because I have never been there, but it won't matter once you start reading.

The Plot is that five kids have been hired to be digital guides in the Magic Kingdom and then discover that their job is much more than what they had thought. They must help stop the Overtakers, a group of villainous Disney ride characters lead by Maleficent, from taking over the Magic Kingdom.

Each book picks up after the next, so you will want to get all three, all in paper back now. The fourth book comes out in April and there is a fifth coming out in the future. These are easy reads, about 4-5th grade level.

I bought this DVD when I found out I was pregnant with Duncan. I think one of my nieces or nephews had it and it was cute. I found it the other day and thought Duncan might like it so I put it in and guess what? He didn't like it- HE LOVED IT!!! He wants to watch it all the time though. It doesn't really bother me because I have a high tolerance level for stuff like that. I used to watch movies over and over and over again when I was younger. Its cute because he really loves Mickey and Goofy (funny side note, he saw Goofy and said,"Dada" yes Dada is goofy) and the Haunted Mansion part does not scare him.

We are taking him to Disneyland in May for his Birthday and because we desperately need a vacation. Is it bad that I am already planning for it. Let's just call it being well prepared. I'm hoping that by showing him the dvd he will find it familiar.

To my 5th grade class for winning Most Creative Door in our schools contest. March is National Reading Month and at school we are having a lot of activities to go with it. Every year there is a door decorating contest and you have to decorate your door based on a Children's book. My class did Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief. (I will put a picture up later, my camera battery died at school before I got a shot of it). They worked really hard on it. The part that won it for them was the lightning bolt that they cut out of cardboard, decorated with glitter and then rigged with lights so that it looked like lighting. We wished the lights blinked, but we got what we could find. I have actually been,for the most part, happy with this years class. Don't get me wrong, I have had plenty of problems with students, but overall I like this class. They went CRAZY when they announced our class. It was so great to see their excitement and then to see it pay off by winning. I don't like to brag, but I just have to a little because I am so proud of them. Then to make it even better, they won the Name that Tune challenge they do every Friday at school. Great way to start their weekend!

. Marshmellow face! I love it. He is such a happy boy. He is talking a lot more now. He says cracker, Papa, please, thank you. If you ask him "what does Donkey Kong do?" He will punch his chest with both fists and say "Ahhh." He is very smart and likes to figure things out. He can now open his bedroom door so we had to flip his door handle and put the lock on the outside and we have to lock him in his room. He is so happy and I can't believe that he will be 2 in May!! Where does the time go?

What you will need
(yes that is a Costco size jar of nutella-it lasts a long time and it comes in a pair) You can find nutella at most grocery stores. Here is my opinion about the fluff-the kind you buy in the store the Jett Puff kind is different than this one you see. I know- how is it possible, it is and this one is better. I buy it at Cost Plus Market Place, but I did find it another time at Bashas, but those are the only places I have found it and it was the same price.

Break your Graham in half

On one half spread some nutella on -don't be shy.
On the other spread some marshmallow fluff.

Put the two pieces together and enjoy.
It is soooo good, you won't want to eat just one. Go ahead, you know you want another.

Happy Valentine's Day

This was first thing in the morning. He is just like me-NOT a morning person. I love his shirt. The Beatles "All You Need Is Love" just for VDay.

This is Duncan's favorite place right now. He loves all things phones. He likes pens and paper. He climbs into this bar stool all by himself. I stopped trying to stop him and I just unplug the phone while he is playing up there, it is easier to let him play and loose interest than fight him to get down.

I left this wreath up from Christmas and just embellished it a little with these simple hearts from Hobby Lobby each $.99 and the LOVE sign from Target dollar spot. Fun and simple and cheep!

Valentines project

I liked the paper that I got, it had a couple pages of vintage looking pictures from Valentines. (click on pictures to see better)

I like the lace under the red button, I just pletted it and glued and it turned out so well.

In January I was feeling very crafty and had gone to Michael's and saw this cute garland made of tied fabric and I thought- I could make that. Then I was looking at this children's book that had a Valentine's garland made of hearts and thought -I like that. And I came up with this idea to make a Valentine garland with both. I went to Michael's and found cute paper and then thought I can cut hearts out it will be fun. Then I discovered that I have a Cricut program that cuts hearts-Bonus!! I didn't have to do them by hand. My mom is really into making cards so I asked for her help and she not only helped me, but let me use most of her supplies.

So how did I do it? I picked the paper that I liked and used my cricut cutter and cut hearts of different sizes. I then glued them on to cereal boxes that I flattened out, and then cut them out again. This gives them some strength without making them too bulky or heavy and cereal boxes cut easily(plus it is recycling-always a good thing). I used glitter, buttons and all the fun things that my mom had. Each heart took some time to do. I really like how the glitter makes it pop. I went through my fabric and pulled out the pinks, whites and reds and tore them into strips, I used white cord that I got at Hobby Lobby. I hole punched a hole on each side of the heart and strung the cord through the back leaving spaces between each for the fabric and ribbon strips. Then I tied the ribbon and fabric in each section in no particular order or amount.

This project was cheaper than buying a garland. The paper came in a package and cost under $9, the cord was $2 and I had the fabric. After I finished I thought-I should have take pictures of how to make a heart. Next time. It is now hanging and I will put pictures up on another day of my Valentine's display.

What a Clown

This boy is getting to be too smart for his own good. He figures everything out. He pushed a stool over to the front door and unlocked it, but couldn't get it open (thank goodness) because he was in front of it. He can twist off a water bottle cap and put it back on. He thinks everything is a phone. I love that he is at the point where he has to have food in both hands. I remember when my nieces and nephews were like that, it was so cute. He is a curious little boy and loves to play and he loves to have fun. He keeps me busy.

Taco Tuesday!!

What you will need

I actually didn't use the chili powder this time and only put salt and garlic powder. Make sure you are generous with the salt and garlic powder. I like to use cheese slices-they are the right thickness and size, I just cut the cheese(hehe) in half.

Brown meat with onions sprinkle with garlic powder and salt at some point while browing, but before it is cooked. Once browned, put to the side. I like to set up an assembly line-see my torilla, cheese and meat, the skillet with oil is next to the meat. Put a cheese slice on tortilla and add some meat, fold and put in hot oil.

Make sure the oil is hot before cooking tacos. (I have found that the tacos cook differently in a non-stick pan as opposed to a stainless steal one-not bad, just different). I like to put the taco bottom in first holding it upright with tongs for a couple of seconds, it helps to keep the torilla closed. Yes cheese will ooz out and you might loose a few pieces of meat-but no worries.

Cook taco on each side until golden brown then put on paper towel. I like it like that-it soaks up some oil. I NEVER buy store bought taco shells-YUCK to me. Go to Taco Bell if that's what you like. Not me.

Here is a funny story. I was talking to my sister a few weeks ago and Ky's birthday was on a Tuesday and she was telling me that his girlfriend came over for dinner and they were having tacos. I said "Oh, you really do have tacos on Tuesday? I thought you guys were always just joking around." She said, "No, we've been doing it for 18 years now!!" So I decided that would make life easier for me and Justin happier- he loves Mexican food and tacos are great and easy to make. So it will be Tacos on Tuesday until who knows when. (I get sick of them-maybe).

Yummy Breakfast Puffs

Okay, so I haven't been good the last two weeks. I am going to get better-I promise. Here is a yummy breakfast that I made. They are French Breakfast Puffs from the Pioneer Woman's cookbook. They are so easy and oh sooooo yummy (and fat free ;) we wish). I'm not sure if you can get the recipe on her website, but go take a look and if you have her cookbook-these are a nice treat and good to share because the recipe makes two dozen.

When went to the Cheesecake Factory to celebrate. Mom got the luau salad-yum

Then came the cheesecake. Aub got her favorite, chocolate Godiva (it just needs to be capitalized). Poor thing took a softball to the face today too at conditioning practice. Busted the inside of her lip. She looked like she had botox done. Made eating a little hard I think.

Growing Strong

Oh this boy is just growing up so fast. When he was born all we wanted was for him to grow and be strong and now I wouldn't mind if he slowed down a bit. He is getting big. Boo! He is 27lbs and has 9 almost 10 teeth! He is a boys boy. He climbs, plays and wants to be outside as much as possible. He is a happy boy and loves to give loves. He loves his nana and papa and throws a fit when they leave. He loves his cousins and had so much fun playing with all the kids when they were here. We miss them. I miss them, it was so nice.

They are soooo sweet and taste nothing like they should. I told Justin he better not give Duncan one of those wannabes. I made these the other day and they are so good and taste like they should. So I say NO to store bought treats that can be made.

Duncan really had a good time playing with her while she was here. Fun and fashionable is what Sam is and a tender heart. I remember when she was still really little maybe 3, we were at the Easter Pageant and she cried at the end.

Rubba dub dub

I know I didn't blog for a couple of days, but I am not counting that due to extreme tiredness and sick little boy. So there, it's my blog and I can make the rules. Duncan loves taking a bath, but I never get to take pictures because this is how he reacts when he sees my camera and then the last picture turns into screaming whinning. Therefore, I limit the number of pictures of bath time.

Duncan has been a little sick, he has a really bad runny nose and a cough. The cough didn't start out that bad, but it just seems to be getting a little worse each day, so I am taking him to the Dr. tomorrow. Here's hoping they can do something for it.

Silly little man

One of Duncan's favorite places to hang out is on the steps, and when he has food Pippin is right beside him waiting in anticipation for him to drop something. Honestly I don't know how you can have kids and no dog. These dogs clean the floor for me so well. After Duncan eats or if he is caring around a cup with cereal, I know I don't have to clean up because the dogs will do it for me. Thank goodness for dogs.

His favorite drawer to get into is of course-my make up drawer.

Too bad for him that daddy put an end to easy access to my drawer. The one thing I don't like about our house is that there is no door to our bathroom. Justin had to baby proof all the cabinets and drawers in our bathroom because Duncan loves to get into everything!!

On a different topic, I was a little disappointed with the dinner I made tonight. I have made Sunday Chicken so many times, and tonight I followed it exactly as it says, but for some reason the rice didn't cook all the way and was crunchy and the chicken had no flavor to it. Blaah- not what I expected after watching Julie & Julia. All that French food and complexity of those recipes and I couldn't get Sunday Chicken to come out right.

My friend made a comment on Face Book that she has heard a lot of people say that 2010 was not a good year for a lot of people. I don't know what it is about this year but I sort of agree. I'm not sure if it was all the stress of moving, but this year has had its good and its bad. We spent 6 months finding a house and then moving very quickly, two weeks spent living with my parents. Then we moved into our house, which I love. We celebrated Duncan's first birthday, and his freedom from the house. He hasn't stopped since. There have been a few things that made this year not so great. I guess my desire to stop working is part of it. I really am going to start looking at other areas for work. I do enjoy teaching, but I just would love to be at home with Duncan. We'll see what happens.

Well, I hope that everyone has a great new year. My goal for this year is to post on here each day for the year, exercise, decorate my house for cheap, take more pictures, enjoy my time with Duncan(I already do, I just want to keep doing it :)

Beutler cousin's party

We had the Beutler cousin's party the day after Christmas. We had pizza. The bottom one was my favorite, fresh mozzarella, tomato slices, and basil from my mom's garden-YUMMY!! The sad thing was that it stuck to the pizza stone, but we scrapped it off and it was still good. Sadly these are the only pictures I took. I swear every time I took my camera out Duncan was right there and wanted that thing. We had a good time, we played charades, and cousins exchanged gifts and played the WII. Kyler had Duncan and he got a wooden train.

** If you have a Fresh and Easy they make really good pizza dough if you don't want to make your own- I recommend the wheat dough. Also, always bake your pizza dough for 8-10 min and then take it out and put your toppings on, it will keep your dough from being soggy.

This is how we found Duncan Christmas morning. I should explain that he figured out how to climb out of his crib. We tried different things, a port a crib-climbed out of it, took the mattress out and put port-a-crib pad down-climbed out. So we took everything out of his room and put the mattress on the floor and I put only soft toys in there and this body pillow.

Santa brought him a Fisher-Price farm and other books and toys.

This was the last picture of the day I think because then he was throwing a fit wanting my camera. This boy is OBSESSED with anything with buttons or levers, or lights. He got my mom's camera later this day and figured out how to use the touch screen on the back. Too smart of his own good. I'm convinced he is part monkey.

A few Days before Christmas

Duncan is getting so big!! He has 8 teeth and two more trying to make there way in. I made him Chocolate gravey and biscuits for the first time. He liked them!

Later that night I made Scoteroos. They were really easy to make and good. I had never made them before, but I saw my sil's blog and wanted to make them. They are veeery rich so if you make them(recipe on the box) cut them into small pieces.

Isaac Cousin's Christmas Party

We had a cousin's party at our house this year. I really wanted to get the kids together to do something so I asked everyone over to have dinner and decorate cookies. My father-in-law made chilli and it was soooo good. Then we let the kids decorate sugar and gingerbread cookies.

Hope out did everyone. She decorated so many cookies!! She did great. She is the oldest and really good with the younger ones. We had a great time and I think we are going to keep this a tradition. We might do something different but I do think cousin's parties are a lot of fun.

Mesa Temple Lights

This was an exciting Christmas year for us. We actually got to spend the day with family. Last year we had to stay home and only got to go to my parents house in the evening for dinner with no one there. This year we got to go do a lot of fun things. Well, they would be fun if Duncan wasn't 19 months old and at the start of his "terrible twos" faze. He was not very pleasant to take to the Temple lights, but it was very pretty. Luckily we went before it was very cold. I enjoy going to see the lights and performances, but let me tell you I will never go on a Monday again;I think everyone was there for FHE. Which is sad because you are there to enjoy the lights and the environment and you can't because it is so crowded you can barely walk on the sidewalk and in hopes of not sounding mean, the missionaries were annoying too. Yes, I said annoying. I know I shouldn't say that, but when you have a toddler that is screaming to get out of the stroller and you are trying to find the rest of your party and the missionary is following you down the sidewalk asking how you are enjoying the lights and if you have any friends who want to hear the message, and telling you that using your cell to get out numbers is good too and all you want to do is scream at him to go away- you can't feel anything. It was nice to go and let Duncan see it and to be with Justin's family, it was just not a good night to go. Either earlier or after Christmas next year.

It was fun to go with my In-laws and our niece Ava and Addie were there too with Kassi and Scott.

I didn't get to take a lot of pictures. Too many people, grouchy kids, husband and I didn't want to stop and hold up a lot of people.

I wish I could say "oh, I totally thought of this myself." But honestly I got this whole idea from another blog. The deer I got at Joann's for only $11.99, all the Christmas stuff is on clearance. I bought the letters at Michael's.

This green tree comes from Hobby Lobby, it too was 50% off for only $8.00. I got the ornaments at Target $5.00 for the set. I had the basket, candles and filling. The little birds are candles that I got at Cost Plus World Market.

I got these cute snowmen at Home Goods for $6.00. I love them. They are made of felt and they just look perfect on my mirrors mantle.

Wildlife World Zoo

I took Duncan to the Wildlife World Zoo before Thanksgiving. Let me just say that I had never been here and I fell in love with it. See this kangaroo? Notice where he is in regards to the rope fence? Yes, he is on the walking path. You can get that close to them. This one was really big and I didn't want to get that close. I'm no dummy, I've seen America's Funniest Home videos of people getting beat up by a kangaroo. I love this next one, see the joey eating. It was so cute.

This cheetah was in a cage above our heads. I think that was so cool that you could walk under him.

There were birds everywhere. This macaw was so pretty! I love all his beautiful feathers. There was a beautiful feather in one of the cages and I just wish it was close enough I could have grabbed it. So pretty.

This zoo also has an aquarium full of fish, frogs, eels, penguins, and sting rays. We got to pet the sting rays, they were really cool. They were like dogs, one kept coming up and splashing to get petted. I loved this zoo, and it is really close to our house.

Missing People

This is a hard time of year when we don't have the people with us that we love. I have already cried thinking of my grandpa, who I miss even though he passed away almost 9 years ago. I think of my friends and pray for their comfort as they go through this season without their babies. It makes me sad that I have friends that have lost a baby. I miss my brothers and their families that live out of state. And then I think of my dear friend Taylia who suddenly passed away earlier this year, and leaves behind 4 beautiful children and a wonderful husband. I was going through a drawer and found some pictures from a singles ward Christmas party from forever ago, and found a picture of Taylia and Jeff. That was the first time they started talking and then they started dating and then were married. Today I was taking more Christmas decorations out and found these stories that Taylia made for me years ago. It was a 12 Days of Christmas gift, a story for 12 days up to Christmas. Even though Taylia and I didn't talk often, she was still a great friend. She always sent me a Christmas card and pictures of her family. They were in China when she passed away. I still have the cards she sent each year.

Great people come into our lives at the right time and she came into mine when I needed a great friend and example.

Snoopy Mountain

Justin and I celebrated our 4th Anniversary by going away for the weekend to Sedona. It was so nice there. We stayed at the Hilton, which was really nice. We spent the day Saturday walking around and looking in shops. Justin had never been to Sedona for more than a few hours. It was fun. We ate at local resturaunts (Coffee Pot Resturaunt is a must if you ever go), walked through the shops, stopped and took in the beautiful red rocks and we even had time for a massage. We were lucky that the weather was so nice on Saturday because it turned on Sunday and it was raining and oh so cold. But I was so excited that I got to see fall colors. Oak Creek was so beautiful, except after it rained because then it looked like red, muddy water.
We so needed this trip together. We hadn't been on a trip since Duncan was born. Aunt Suzi and Aubree and Ky kept him busy with the zoo and other fun things.

Some Summer Fun

Living in Arizona there are very few things you can do out doors in the summer. In fact you don't want to do anything outside if you live in Phoenix or the surrounding cities. Unless you live in the cooler parts of AZ you spend your time inside. Thankfully there are a few places here that you can go and they are indoors. We do have a fun Science center, but Duncan is too small for that. Across the street there is a Children's Museum. We decided to go there because I had heard there is more to do there for small ones. I was really excited to find out they have an entire room just for 3 and under children, and what is better is that it is a shoe free room so no one can wear their shoes in there. Which eased my nerves a bit since I am a little bit freakish about Duncan and germs.

We had a fun time. It was fun to see how Duncan did interacting with other children. He doesn't really. He plays really well all by himself, but he does have fun playing with his cousin Ava, she is one of the only kids I have seen him interact with, well besides Aubree and Kyler (who he totally loves). I didn't get to take a lot of pictures or very good pictures because as soon as he looked at one thing he was off to the other. He is a very active boy and loves to discover new things.

Catch up

This summer has gone by so quickly and for some it is not over. I guess "summer" isn't over when school starts, it's still hot. I should say summer break is over. I went back to work on Thursday and this is going to be an interesting year in many ways. Duncan is going to a babysitter for two days a week, Nana and Papa two days and Grandma one day. So he will have a variety of venues to keep him busy. He is doing great. His top two teeth FINALLY broke through and that has seemed to bring him some relief. He isn't as whinny as he was anyway. The big thing is that he is trying to walk. He started by walking around things, then he started climbing over and through EVERYTHING!! Now he is standing and letting go of things and walking to them. I also see him trying to stand up from sitting position. I think in another week he will be walking. He is curious and adventurous and loves to open drawers and he can't stand for tables to have anything on them and feels it his job to clean them off. He is eating more and more solid food, he loves watermelon, peaches, cantaloupe, cheerios, nutrigrain bars are a new thing he loves and Goldfish. Oh and he loves pasta.

We took him back to the NICU this week as well to visit his neonatologist Dr. Naser and some of the nurses that took care of him. It was really nice to see them. They were so shocked by how big he is. He got his picture taken and they put it on the wall of NICU Graduates. It was strange at first walking down the hall that I walked everyday for three months and two weeks. Sometimes alone, sometimes with family and then this time with Duncan.

So now it is back to reality and the daily grind. I am going to miss my afternoon naps with Duncan. I'm just going to miss being with him all day.

We decided last year when Duncan was in the Hospital that after his first birthday we were going to take him to Disneyland. I'm so glad we did. I know people don't think you should take kids until they are older, but it was a lot of fun. The only thing I would recommend is this-if your baby is not crawling yet go- if they are walking go- if they are just crawling don't go. That is the only complaint I have. When they are crawling that is not a good time to take them there. There is no where for kids to get down and crawl so it was a little frustrating for him.

My mom and dad went with us and I was glad they were there. Duncan is definitely a Papa's boy. He wanted my dad to carry him all the time or me. It was so cute watching him just look around at everything there. He was in awe of everything and every one. He loves other kids and older women. He loves the characters- he wasn't afraid of them at all. He met Pooh, Eeor, Tiger, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Rabbit, Chip and Dale, and Pluto and loved all of them. One of his favorite area's was Toon Town and The Bugs Life area in California Adventures. He loved everything except the Haunted Mansion, but that could have been because he was tired, but I think we'll wait until he is older to try that one again. He loved Pirates though. He just looked around at everything on each ride.

He was really good. He slept in his stroller and didn't have a hard time getting him to sleep in the hotel (i was worried about that) and he LOVED the ice cream. Justin and I both agreed that having kids at Disneyland is a lot different than going by yourselves, but it was better in a way. We were just happy to be there as a family.

Fun in the Sun in California

My boys at the beach- I love Mission Beach, it is still one of the cleanest beaches in Cali and on the day we were there it was not crowded at all.

After our trip to Disneyland we went to San Diego for a day. We stayed at The Dana on Mission- I really like that place. We went to the beach, didn't plan it too well. We decided that the pool would be better because Duncan would want to be in the sand too much and probably eating it. That night we went and met Justin's Uncle and his partner and they took us to dinner. It was a lot of fun. We had a great time visiting with them and after we left I realized I didn't get a picture with them. Duh!! They have a miniature schnauzer (?) and she and Duncan LOVED each other. They were playing and Ava (the dog) I think seriously thought Duncan was the best toy ever. It was so fun getting to visit with them.

I love this picture. He was so happy to be with Mickey.

He loved his nose and wanted to keep playing with it.

Since Duncan was about 4 or 5 months old he has loved watching Mickey Mouse Club House on Disney. He would be fussy and it would come on and he would instantly stop what he was doing when Mickey came on screen. He still loves him and is in a trance when he watches that show. I remember saying before I had kids that I wouldn't really let them watch too much t.v., but Mickey Mouse is really educational. They teach some really good problem solving skills and math-so if he watches it know, maybe he will be good at math.

But it was so cute when we finally took him to Toontown to meet Mickey. We walked through the house and it takes you back and you have to get in a line and they take you into meet him. There was hardly anyone there so we didn't have to wait long. He was so excited when Mickey took him. He smiled and wanted to touch his nose. So cute. I am excited that he isn't afraid of the characters.

It's a Superman Birthday

Duncan is free and we celebrated big. It was a Superman party for a baby that is a little Superman himself. It has been a rough year-full of ups and downs, but we are so excited that Duncan is well and able to go out and have fun now. We had a big party for him. Lots of friends and family that haven't met him came for the occation. We had delicious Honey Bears BBQ (symbolic since we ate there a few times while he was in the hospital), and other yummy food. I know my family members that live in other states are really jealous since they missed the BBQ. Oh, Duncan weighs 21lbs 4oz and is 291/4 in. long-and he likes to grab for everything. Nothing is safe anymore.

I started planning his party back in Februray and kept going back and forth on the theme, but then decided that he really needed a Superman theme. A little trivia, Superman is one of the hardest copyrighted franchises-meaning that they don't make a lot of superman stuff because people have a hard time getting permission to make it. So I had to get creative, and luckily my sister told me that Cricut made a Superman program. So I bought it and started cutting things out. I made the symbol you see on the table, I made a Happy Birthday banner(I will put that picture up later) and the cute little cape that Duncan is wearing. It was a lot of fun, and a lot of work too, but again, that's why I planned ahead.

I made his cake (with a little help from Aunt Heather). It was yummy-I guess because it was just for Duncan.

This is what I created and put for center pieces. (the capes and symbol are from the Cricut program).The weather had been hot here, but then on Saturday it cooled down and brought the wind with it. It was almost impossible to get the table tops on. I think the parents hated me for these center pieces, their kids kept eating the candy-oh well, its a party and that's what the candy was for. (the jelly beans are Kryponite and the licorice is just cute cuz it's red!)

Some firsts

We took Duncan to church for the first time and he loved it. He slept the first hour as church starts at nap time, but he did really good.

His first shopping trip ever, and of course it had to be to Target! He was so good, of course he was busy looking at everything.

At first he didn't really know what to do

By the end he had purple sleeves- it looks like he is transforming into Barney. I think it was too much sugar for him.

We decided at the last minute that we needed to get a cake for him, I wanted just a cup cake, but this was what Justin came back with. It was fine, he enjoyed it for about 10 min. then he went right into the bath. His birthday party is next weekend and I'm going to make him a smaller cake, but this was a good first run.

The day has finally come, Duncan has turned ONE!!!!

This has been a loooong year, and I have never been so glad for a babies birthday. In one more week he will be free to roam about the state. He can go places and we are doing it big. We are taking Duncan to Disneyland on the 23rd for a week. We need a vacation and we couldn't think of a better place to go. We are very excited to see how Duncan reacts when he sees all the characters and people. He is a sweet little boy and is already full of mischief. He has already started the destruction faze by breaking a box shelf I had taken down; he managed to pull it down and it broke. He is all over the place and loves to try to pet the dogs, the dogs really appreciate it.

Duncan's Journey

Looking at Duncan like this was so overwhelming. The first night I saw him in the hospital I thought,"I can't do this, this isn't what I want" but I knew he would be okay. The journey would be long, but rough.

Not being able to hold our baby was so incredibly hard. Too many tubes, and lines. Any movement could collapse his lungs.

And then the miracles continued to come. He didn't have a brain bleed, the medication closed the hole in his heart enough that it wasn't a serious problem. He grew. He overcame. Heavenly Father blessed his life and our life too.

And now that 1lb 12oz baby is 20lbs and about to turn one! He is a miracle and a testament that priesthood blessings bring about miracles. I knew he would be okay. Heavenly Father promised that in times of great need and trail he will be there with angels to bear us up. He was there and I felt it and I knew he would be okay.

Moving all Around

This is his new trick-he is pulling himself up and standing! We had to move the coffee table out so he wouldn't hit his head or mouth. He went from rolling to sitting up on his own to standing up and now he is starting to crawl. Little by little his crawling is getting better. Now we have to get into baby proofing mod, he is so curious and wants to get into everything.

He thinks he is so cool now that he can get around better.

I can't believe he will be ONE in just two weeks!!! So glade that year has gone by without any hospital stays or major illnesses. What a blessed little baby.

Grandma in the Mountains

Doctor Update

Duncan went to the Pulmanologist today and things are looking great! He is developing and growing as he should. He is 19lbs 281/2 in. long and he is doing great. I asked her today if we could take him to Disneyland and she said of course, that would be good-she even suggested that we go at the end of May before it gets too crowed there. I asked if I could take him swimming this summer and she said absolutely, swimming is really good for the lungs. So we only have to make it through the rest of this month and April and one more holiday and then he can be a free baby!! It will be so nice to be able to take him places. I don't know what he is going to do when he can be around people (besides the ones he is allowed around).

Ear What?!

Angus has a really bad fungal infection in his ears. Yes, it looks as bad as it sounds. I feel bad because it has probably been like that for about 2 maybe 2 1/2 weeks since I noticed that something might be wrong and I didn't take him to the vet until tonight. I almost threw up when the vet swabbed his ear and showed it to me! YUCK!! Now I have to clean his ear and put drops in them for the next two weeks. Poor doggie.

Oh, this boy is getting so big! I can't believe he is 18lbs 8oz. He is a growing boy. The last few weeks have been a test of patience. Duncan has had a hard time adjusting to baby food, it keeps plugging him up. He had a little ear infection a few weeks ago and I was afraid he had another one, so off he went to the Dr. on Fri. Daddy got to take him this time and he did not have another ear infection. So why is he so grouchy?! She said he could be teething. I'm not sure of that, but it would explain how grumpy he is. She also recommended that we give him a stool softener. It worked!! We have to give it to him until his body adjusts to the food, because a plugged up baby is a very unhappy baby, and that makes a very tired mommy and daddy.

Oh I love going to the theater! Last night my mom, Suzi and I went to see this. It was so good. I still love the movie more, it is my all time favorite live action Disney movie. I used to make my brother Ben watch this with me a lot. My two favorite parts of the play were Supercalifragalisticsexpialidocious they had an awesome dance to that and Step in time, with all the chimney sweeps. It was a great time. I recommend it, worth the money.

He can sleep where ever we put him. That is one of the positive out comes of Duncan's stay in the NICU-he can sleep through noise.

Big Boy

My little baby is getting so BIG! I can't believe this one time 1 lb 12oz baby is now almost 18 lbs. Duncan is doing so well. I can't wait to take him to the pulmanologist in March, I'll find out when he can start going out of the house. I have a lot of plans for this guy this summer. I want to take him to the Wild Life Zoo, the aquarium, to the swimming pool- Oh, I have plans and I have things I want to do with this little guy.

On another note- a dear friend of mine from work is expecting her first baby and unfortunately things are not going as well as they had hoped- please pray for her and her baby they really need them.

I love these pants. His Aunt Elisabeth sent these to him and I was so excited to discover that they matched the onesie I bought him perfectly. So cute.
